Are people in the Balkans friendly to American tourists

Dear Croatia travel guide,

I am just curious about one thing: Are people in the Balkans friendly to American tourists?

I am a bit angry.

Thanks a lot!

Take care,
Aiden

Hi Aiden,

I've personally never heard that American tourists were not treated with the same respect and friendliness as other tourists.

Indeed, a lot of Croatians migrated to the United States in the 90s because of the war. During peak season you can even see a lot of cars - mainly from the New York area, because they still have properties in Croatia - visit family members etc.

So, don't worry :-)

Hope that helps!

Croats welcome all with open arms and hearts!!

Stay in areas that are largely populated with tourists. This way translation will not be an issue. I had a wonderful time and all seemed to be kind towards us Americans. The younger people tend to be very kind and open to helping the English tourists, they speak the language for the most part too. The older (40-50 yr olds) tend to speak more German than they do English. However, they will do what they can to help you too. Enjoy the Balkans!!!

Thank you

Doreena,

Thanks very much for sharing your experiences.
Great post!

@Aiden: As you can see there are really a lot of Americans in Croatia each year and everyone who talks to me is fascinated by this small but echanting country. And one more thing: Don't be shy. As Doreena wrote - the younger Croatians have no problem with the English language. Tip: A smile is the first gesture and will open most doors (a language that anybody understands) :-)

Thanks again, Doreena
