Croatia Adventure Travel

Croatia adventure travel is growing in popularity.

The country’s sparkling coastline, eight national parks, mountain lakes, and lush forests provide the traveler with plenty of opportunities to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities...

Diving the Adriatic Sea

Diving is a great activity for the adventurous traveler. In Croatia there is a diving club or center everywhere you turn – on the islands in the Adriatic and along the coast.

The diving here is unique because you can see more than just sea life. In fact, people dive to witness the multitude of underwater treasures that have accumulated over the centuries. You’ll come across wrecks, coral reefs, caves, and fish.

Sea and River Kayaking

This activity is getting big in the field of Croatia adventure travel. Spring and early summer are the best times for kayaking, as this is when the flow is the highest.

The warm temperatures of spring and summer make for pleasant kayaking conditions. However, sometimes the midday maestral winds, cold northern bura, and southeastern jugo winds can interfere with kayaking excursions.

The waters of Croatia often contain jagged rocks, so it’s a good idea to use a polyethylene kayak for sea kayaking.

Where is some of the best kayaking in Croatia?

Head to the four rivers of Karlovac – the Dobra, Mreznica, Korana, and Kupa rivers provide fantastic kayaking in the warmer months of the year. The Dobra river has a huge canyon for some of the greatest kayaking in Europe.

The Mreznica is the shortest of all the rivers, made up of small lakes and waterfalls. The Kupa is the largest, with its source in Risnjak National Park. The Korana flows from Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Mountain Climbing

The coastal mountains of Croatia are ideal for rock climbing because they’re composed of karst, a porous limestone that allows for easy climbing. There are several destinations throughout the country where you can go rock climbing:

At Paklenica there are 400 spots to climb for all experience levels, from beginner to advanced.

The favorite spot is a cliff that rises 350m high (Anica kuk).

Baska’s mild climate allows for year-round climbing along the rock of Baska beach.

At Biokovo you’ll find 200m to 400m climbing routes on the mountains between Baska Voda and Mt. Biokovo.

The southern cliffs of Marjan Forest Park is the site of the Marjan Cup, held every April. Visitors come here each year to see rock climbing at its best and to enjoy the views.

Cycling

Photo cycling It’s not hard to find beautiful cycling paths in Croatia – they are everywhere. Bike trails wind through gorgeous countryside and mountainous parks.

As a visitor, it can be tricky to find a bike rental facility, so booking a cycling tour is the best way to see the country on two wheels.
